ForgeArt: Sovereign Art Ownership on BSV
Forgechain OS Product #14
Version 1.0 — March 2026
Author: Jack Mosel / Forgechain OS
Abstract
Artists are getting robbed. Not by thieves. By the platforms they depend on, the legal systems they can't afford, and the culture that decided their work isn't worth protecting unless they're already famous.
ForgeArt is a blockchain-native system for art copyright, provenance, sale, and royalty enforcement built on Bitcoin SV. It replaces paper certificates with immutable chain records. It replaces 30% gallery commissions with 2.5% platform fees. It replaces $65 government copyright filings with sub-cent on-chain timestamps. And it replaces the speculative NFT circus with something artists actually need: a deed of ownership that works like a deed of ownership.
This is not about selling monkey JPEGs to speculators. This is about giving every working artist on earth an affordable, permanent, verifiable record of what they made, when they made it, and who owns it.
1. The Problem
Copyright Is a Rich Person's Game
The United States Copyright Office charges $65 per registration. Processing takes 3 to 6 months. The average independent artist produces 30 to 100 works per year. At $65 per piece, copyright registration alone would cost $1,950 to $6,500 annually, assuming the artist even knows the process exists. Most don't. Most have never registered a single work.
Without registration, enforcement is nearly impossible. You can't collect statutory damages. You can't recover attorney's fees. You can sue, but you'll spend $10,000 minimum to recover $500 in damages. The system protects artists who already have money. Everyone else gets a theoretical right they can't exercise.
Platforms Take Everything
Instagram takes your content and gives you nothing. Zero revenue share. Zero ownership tools. Your art becomes engagement bait for their ad algorithm.
Etsy charges a listing fee, a transaction fee, a payment processing fee, and an offsite ads fee. Total take: 15 to 20% before shipping costs.
Galleries take 40 to 60% commission on physical sales. Some charge hanging fees on top of that.
Saatchi Art takes 35%. Artsy charges galleries $500/month minimum for listing access.
The artist, the person who actually made the thing, gets what's left. For most artists, what's left is nothing.
NFTs Got Poisoned
The 2021 NFT boom promised artist empowerment. What it delivered was a speculative casino where the art was irrelevant and the "community" was a pump-and-dump scheme with Discord servers.
Bored Apes. CryptoPunks. Pudgy Penguins. The cultural association of "NFT" is now: overpriced, overhyped, environmentally wasteful, and probably a scam.
This is a tragedy, because the underlying technology is exactly what artists need. A non-fungible token is just a unique digital certificate tied to a specific asset. That's a certificate of authenticity. That's provenance. That's a deed. The concept is sound. The execution was hijacked by speculators who didn't care about art.
ForgeArt reclaims the technology by stripping away the speculation and building for the people who actually make things.
Provenance Is a Paper Problem
In the physical art world, provenance is a chain of paper documents. Gallery receipts, handwritten notes, auction catalogs, estate records. These documents can be forged, lost, damaged, or simply never created.
Authentication disputes consume the art world. The Knoedler Gallery scandal ran for over a decade, involving $80 million in forged abstract expressionist paintings with fabricated provenance chains. Paper provenance enabled every step of that fraud.
Even for legitimate artists operating at small scale, provenance is an afterthought. A local painter sells a piece at a craft fair. There's no receipt. No certificate. No record. Five years later, the buyer wants to resell. They have no proof of purchase, no proof of authenticity, no connection to the original artist. The sale either doesn't happen or happens at a steep discount.
The Small Artist Paradox
An artist with 208 Instagram followers, a good eye, and a garage studio has zero viable path to monetization under the current system. They can't afford gallery representation. They can't afford copyright registration. They can't afford a custom e-commerce site. They can't afford a lawyer.
They post their work to Instagram, where it gets 12 likes and zero sales. They list on Etsy, where it drowns in a sea of mass-produced prints. They apply to local galleries, which are already full.
This isn't a talent problem. It's an infrastructure problem. The tools for protecting and selling art were built for artists who are already successful. ForgeArt builds them for everyone else.
2. ForgeArt Architecture
ForgeArt operates as a 5-layer stack. Each layer handles a distinct phase of the art lifecycle: creation, verification, sale, resale, and display.
Layer 1: MINT
The minting process establishes permanent, timestamped proof that a specific artwork was created by a specific artist at a specific time.
Process flow:
- Artist uploads a high-resolution photograph of their artwork (physical or digital).
- The system generates a SHA-256 hash of the image file. This hash is a unique fingerprint. Any modification to the file, even a single pixel, produces a completely different hash.
- A BSV transaction is constructed with an OP_RETURN output containing: the image hash, the artwork title, the artist's name or pseudonym, the creation date, and optional metadata (medium, dimensions, edition number).
- The transaction is broadcast to the BSV network and confirmed in a block. The block timestamp is immutable. It cannot be backdated, altered, or deleted.
- An NFT token is issued on BSV representing ownership of the artwork. This token is a 1-of-1 digital asset tied to the specific piece.
What this proves: On March 15, 2026, at 14:32:07 UTC, an artist named Kate Hoekstra registered an oil painting titled "Morning at Cold Spring" with the hash a7f3b9c2.... That fact is now permanent. It exists on every copy of the BSV blockchain worldwide. No government, platform, or corporation can alter or remove it.
Cost: Approximately 0.01 BSV per mint. At current prices, that's fractions of a cent. Compare to $65 for USCO registration.
Layer 2: PROVE
Proof without accessibility is worthless. PROVE generates human-readable, publicly verifiable certificates of authenticity.
Certificate of Authenticity page:
Each minted artwork gets a unique URL on the ForgeArt platform. This page displays:
- The artwork image
- Artist name and bio
- Title, medium, dimensions, date
- The BSV transaction hash (clickable link to block explorer)
- The SHA-256 image hash
- A verification tool: upload any image file, and the page will hash it and compare against the on-chain record. Match = authentic. No match = different file.
Why this matters: The certificate is not a PDF that can be Photoshopped. It's a live reference to an immutable blockchain record. Anyone can verify it. The artist can print the TX hash on a physical card and attach it to a gallery piece. The buyer can check it from their phone in 10 seconds.
Timestamp as prior art: In intellectual property disputes, the earliest provable timestamp wins. A BSV block timestamp is cryptographically secured and globally distributed. It is stronger evidence of creation date than any paper record, any email, any social media post. ForgeArt minting is de facto prior art registration.
Layer 3: SELL
Primary sales are handled through smart contract escrow via ForgePay integration.
Transaction flow:
- Artist lists artwork for sale on ForgeArt. Price is set in BSV (with fiat equivalent displayed).
- Buyer initiates purchase. Payment is sent to a smart contract escrow address, not directly to the artist.
- Escrow holds funds until fulfillment conditions are met.
- For physical artwork: artist confirms shipment and provides tracking. Buyer confirms receipt. Contract releases funds to artist.
- For digital artwork: delivery is automatic. Contract releases funds upon confirmed download.
- The ownership NFT transfers from artist wallet to buyer wallet.
- A royalty percentage (default 10%, artist-configurable 5-15%) is locked into the token's smart contract for all future resales.
Dispute resolution: If the buyer claims non-receipt or misrepresentation, the escrow holds funds in a time-locked state. A resolution window opens. If unresolved, funds return to the buyer after 30 days. This protects both parties without requiring a centralized arbitrator.
No chargebacks: BSV transactions are final. Unlike credit card payments, which galleries lose 2-5% of annual revenue to chargebacks, BSV settlement is irreversible once confirmed. The escrow model provides buyer protection without the chargeback risk that destroys small sellers.
Layer 4: RESELL
Secondary market sales enforce artist royalties automatically.
How it works:
The NFT token carries embedded contract logic. When the token transfers to a new owner in a sale transaction, the contract automatically splits the payment:
- Seller receives sale price minus royalty percentage
- Original artist receives the royalty (default 10%)
- Platform receives 2.5% facilitation fee
This is not optional. It's not a gentleman's agreement. It's enforced by the transaction structure itself. The artist gets paid on every resale, forever.
Why BSV: Ethereum-based NFT royalties are advisory. OpenSea enforces them voluntarily. Other marketplaces don't. Blur explicitly built its market share by undercutting royalties. Artists on Ethereum have no guarantee.
BSV's UTXO model allows transaction-level scripting that enforces output splits. The royalty isn't a platform policy. It's part of the transaction. Skip the royalty, the transaction doesn't validate.
Layer 5: DISPLAY
Art exists to be seen. DISPLAY integrates with the Forgechain ecosystem to create immersive viewing experiences.
ForgeView Constellation:
Every artwork minted on ForgeArt becomes a node in the ForgeView 3D visualization engine. The gallery view renders as a spatial constellation where:
- Each artwork is a glowing node
- Ownership transfers are animated edges connecting nodes
- Artist portfolios cluster organically
- Viewers navigate the space in 3D, clicking nodes to inspect artwork, read provenance, or initiate purchase
AR Anchors via ForgeVerse:
Physical artworks can be tagged with AR anchors. A buyer hangs a painting on their wall. A visitor points their phone at it. ForgeVerse renders the provenance chain, the artist's statement, the ownership history, all floating in augmented space around the physical piece.
Gallery Sites via ForgeSite:
Artists get a custom web gallery with zero monthly fees. The gallery pulls directly from their ForgeArt portfolio. Every piece links to its chain record. The site is the storefront. The chain is the back office.
3. Smart Contract Model
ForgeArt smart contracts are built on BSV Script, the native scripting language of the BSV blockchain.
Escrow Contract
The escrow contract is a P2SH (Pay-to-Script-Hash) transaction with three possible spending paths:
- Fulfillment: Both artist and buyer sign, releasing funds to the artist. This is the happy path.
- Refund: Time-lock expires (30 days) without fulfillment confirmation. Funds return to buyer automatically.
- Mutual cancellation: Both parties sign a cancellation transaction. Funds return to buyer immediately.
No third party holds the funds. No platform has custody. The BSV network enforces the contract.
Royalty Enforcement
The NFT token's transfer script includes a mandatory output split. Any valid transfer transaction must include:
- An output paying the royalty percentage to the artist's address
- An output paying the platform fee to the ForgeArt address
- An output transferring the token to the new owner
Transactions that omit the royalty output are invalid. They won't be accepted by the network. This is not a policy. It's mathematics.
Certificate of Authenticity Generation
Upon minting, the system generates a structured data payload in the OP_RETURN:
FORGEART_V1 | SHA256:<hash> | TITLE:<title> | ARTIST:<name> | DATE:<ISO8601> | MEDIUM:<medium> | DIMS:<dimensions> | EDITION:<n/total> | ROYALTY:<percentage>
This payload is human-readable on any block explorer. No proprietary decoder needed. Anyone with a BSV block explorer can read the certificate data directly from the transaction.
4. Economic Model
Minting Costs
BSV transaction fees are based on data size, not network congestion. A typical ForgeArt mint transaction is approximately 300 bytes. At BSV's current fee rate, this costs roughly 0.01 BSV, which is a fraction of a cent at current exchange rates.
An artist minting 100 works pays approximately 1 BSV total. At current prices, that's roughly $50 for permanent, immutable copyright registration of their entire catalog. The same protection from USCO would cost $6,500 and take years.
Platform Fees
| Action | ForgeArt Fee | Traditional Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Mint (copyright) | ~$0.005 | $65 (USCO) |
| Primary sale | 2.5% | 15-40% (gallery/platform) |
| Secondary sale | 2.5% + artist royalty | 15-40% (no royalty) |
| Monthly subscription | $0 | $20-500/month |
| Listing fee | $0 | $0.20-1.00 per item |
Artist Revenue Comparison
An artist sells a painting for $500:
| Platform | Artist Receives |
|---|---|
| Gallery (50% commission) | $250 |
| Saatchi Art (35% commission) | $325 |
| Etsy (all fees combined) | $400-415 |
| ForgeArt (2.5% fee) | $487.50 |
On a $500 sale, the artist keeps an extra $237.50 compared to a traditional gallery. Over 20 sales per year, that's $4,750 back in the artist's pocket.
Royalty Revenue (New Money)
Under the current system, artists receive nothing when their work resells. A painter sells a piece for $500 at a craft fair. Five years later, the buyer sells it for $2,000 at auction. The artist gets zero.
With ForgeArt's 10% default royalty: the artist receives $200 on that resale. And $300 if it resells again for $3,000. And so on, forever.
This isn't theoretical. The Droit de Suite (Artist's Resale Right) exists in EU law but is nearly impossible to enforce for small artists. ForgeArt enforces it automatically, globally, without lawyers.
5. Case Study: Lilac Inn Gallery
The Artist
Kate Hoekstra operates the Lilac Inn Gallery in Carmel, New York. She produces original paintings and mixed-media works. Her subject matter draws from the Hudson Valley landscape and local architecture.
Current State (Benchmark)
- Instagram followers: 208
- Online sales to date: 0
- Content creation effort: Months of consistent posting, photography, story creation
- Revenue from digital presence: $0
- Copyright registrations: 0
- Gallery representation: Self-represented, local shows only
Kate is doing everything the social media playbook tells her to do. Post consistently. Use hashtags. Engage with followers. Build community. The result: 208 followers and zero revenue. This is not a Kate problem. This is a platform problem.
ForgeArt Implementation Plan
Phase 1 (Month 1): Catalog and Mint
- Photograph 20-30 existing works at high resolution
- Mint each piece on BSV via ForgeArt
- Total minting cost: approximately $0.15
- Each piece now has an immutable creation record, a verifiable certificate, and an ownership NFT
Phase 2 (Month 1-2): Gallery Launch
- Deploy ForgeSite-powered gallery at a custom domain
- Each listing links to its on-chain certificate
- Price works in USD with BSV settlement option
- Integrate ForgePay escrow for buyer protection
Phase 3 (Month 2-3): Funnel Flip
- Instagram becomes a funnel to the owned gallery, not the destination
- Every post links to the ForgeArt listing, not a DM inquiry
- Certificate of Authenticity becomes the selling point: "Every piece is blockchain-verified. Your purchase is permanent, provable, and protected."
- Local marketing angle: "Carmel's first blockchain-certified art gallery"
Phase 4 (Month 3+): First Sales
- Target: 3-5 primary sales within 90 days of launch
- At an average sale price of $400 with 2.5% platform fee, Kate keeps $390 per sale
- Compare: same $400 piece through a local gallery at 50% commission nets Kate $200
Projected 12-Month Impact:
| Metric | Before ForgeArt | After ForgeArt (Projected) |
|---|---|---|
| Works with copyright proof | 0 | 25+ |
| Monthly platform costs | $0 (no sales) | $0 |
| Revenue per $400 sale | $200 (gallery) | $390 (ForgeArt) |
| Resale royalty income | $0 | 10% of every secondary sale |
| Provenance documentation | None | Immutable, verifiable |
Kate doesn't need more followers. She needs better infrastructure. ForgeArt provides it.
6. Ecosystem Integration
ForgeArt is Product #14 in the Forgechain OS ecosystem. It doesn't operate in isolation. It connects to every other Forgechain product through shared chain infrastructure and unified identity.
ForgePay (Payments)
All ForgeArt transactions settle through ForgePay. Buyers can pay in BSV directly or through fiat on-ramp. Artists receive BSV to their wallet. ForgePay handles escrow logic, royalty splits, and fee distribution.
ForgeCreate (AI-Assisted Art)
Artists using ForgeCreate's AI tools can mint directly from the creation pipeline. Generate a piece with ComfyUI. Stamp it on chain. List it on ForgeArt. One workflow, no manual steps. The AI-generated provenance is transparent: the chain record includes the model, the prompt hash, and the generation parameters.
ForgeView (3D Gallery)
ForgeView renders ForgeArt catalogs as navigable 3D constellations. Gallery openings become spatial experiences. Collectors explore artist portfolios in a starfield of glowing artwork nodes, each one clickable, purchasable, and chain-verified.
ForgeVerse (AR Display)
Physical artwork gets a digital twin via AR anchors. Point a phone at a painting on a wall. See the provenance chain, the artist's process video, the ownership history. The physical and digital layers merge.
ForgeSocial (Artist Identity)
Artist profiles on ForgeSocial are chain-linked. Reputation is built on verifiable sales, verified creations, and community engagement, not follower counts. A ForgeSocial profile is a portable, sovereign identity that works across the entire ecosystem.
ForgeSite (Web Gallery)
Every ForgeArt artist gets a ForgeSite-powered web presence. Custom domain. Zero monthly cost. Portfolio, about page, contact, store, all pulling from their ForgeArt catalog. Updates once, publishes everywhere.
ForgeMarketplace (Listings)
ForgeMarketplace aggregates listings across all ForgeArt artists into a searchable, filterable marketplace. Buyers discover art by medium, price, region, or style. Every listing is chain-backed.
BSV Chain (Settlement Layer)
Everything settles on BSV. Minting, payments, royalties, identity, provenance. One chain. Sub-cent fees. Unbounded scaling. No gas wars. No congestion. No bridge exploits. The chain is the source of truth.
7. Competitive Landscape
vs OpenSea / Rarible (Ethereum NFT Marketplaces)
| Factor | OpenSea/Rarible | ForgeArt |
|---|---|---|
| Gas fees (minting) | $5-50+ | <$0.01 |
| Gas fees (sale) | $10-100+ | <$0.01 |
| Royalty enforcement | Optional/advisory | Mandatory (script-level) |
| Cultural perception | Speculative, scammy | Utility-focused, artist-first |
| Physical art support | Minimal | Native (escrow + shipping) |
| Environmental cost | High (pre-merge legacy) | Negligible (BSV proof-of-work, efficient) |
Ethereum NFT platforms were built for digital collectible speculation. ForgeArt is built for working artists who make real things.
vs Saatchi Art / Artsy (Online Art Platforms)
| Factor | Saatchi/Artsy | ForgeArt |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | 35%+ | 2.5% |
| Monthly fees | $0-500 | $0 |
| Provenance | Platform-dependent | Immutable chain record |
| Resale royalties | None | Automatic, enforced |
| Artist control | Platform-mediated | Sovereign (artist holds keys) |
| Curator gatekeeping | Yes | No |
Saatchi and Artsy are digital galleries with traditional economics. They replaced the physical gallery's walls with a website and kept the commission structure. ForgeArt replaces the economics entirely.
vs USCO Copyright Registration
| Factor | USCO | ForgeArt Minting |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per work | $65 | ~$0.005 |
| Processing time | 3-6 months | ~10 seconds |
| Bulk registration | Complex, limited | Unlimited, instant |
| Verification | Manual lookup | Instant, public, cryptographic |
| Global validity | US jurisdiction only | Borderless, immutable |
| Enforcement utility | Required for US statutory damages | Proves prior art globally |
ForgeArt minting is not a legal replacement for USCO registration in US courts. But it provides stronger proof of creation date and authorship than any paper system, at 1/13,000th the cost, in 10 seconds instead of 6 months.
vs Doing Nothing (Status Quo)
This is the real competitor. 99% of working artists have no copyright protection, no provenance documentation, no royalty mechanism, and no affordable sales channel.
The status quo costs nothing upfront and everything over time. Every unregistered work is unprotected. Every platform sale loses 15-40% to commissions. Every resale generates zero for the creator. Every provenance dispute is unresolvable.
Doing nothing is the most expensive option. It's just invoiced slowly.
8. The Vision
There are roughly 2 million working artists in the United States alone. Globally, the number is uncountable. The vast majority of them have never registered a copyright, never received a resale royalty, and never sold through a channel that took less than 15% of their revenue.
ForgeArt exists because the art world's infrastructure was built for galleries, auction houses, and collectors. It was never built for artists. The people who make the work have always been at the bottom of the economic stack, dependent on intermediaries who capture most of the value.
Blockchain changes this. Not the speculative blockchain of 2021 that turned art into gambling chips. The utility blockchain. The one that processes transactions for fractions of a cent and stores data permanently for fractions of a cent more.
An NFT is not a monkey. It's a deed. It's a certificate. It's a receipt, a royalty contract, and a provenance chain in a single, immutable record.
ForgeArt makes this accessible to an artist who has never heard of a private key. Upload your art. Click mint. You now have permanent, verifiable, global proof that you made this, when you made it, and that it's yours. List it for sale. Keep 97.5% of the revenue. Get paid automatically on every future resale. No gallery. No lawyer. No $65 government form.
This is what the technology was always supposed to do. ForgeArt builds it for the people who actually need it.
Every artist on earth deserves to protect their work for fractions of a cent. Every artist on earth deserves to keep the vast majority of what they earn. Every artist on earth deserves to get paid when their work appreciates.
ForgeArt makes that real.
